Most people who pay tax in the UK are entitled to an HMRC Personal Tax Allowance (or simply ‘Personal Allowance’). This is the amount of money you can earn in a tax year before you have to pay any Income Tax on it.

The Personal Allowance you qualify for is listed in your tax code, which is one of the reasons why it’s so important to check that your code’s correct. If your tax code lists the wrong Personal Allowance for you, you’re probably paying the wrong amount of tax.
