What is capital gains tax?

Capital Gains Tax Rates 2024/25

For the 2024/25 tax year, CGT rates depend on your total taxable income and the type of asset you’ve sold. Here’s a breakdown:

Basic Rate Taxpayers: 10% on capital gains, unless the asset is residential property, in which case the rate is 18%.
Higher Rate Taxpayers: 20% on capital gains, unless the asset is residential property, in which case the rate is 28%.
For Entrepreneurs or Investors in Certain Businesses: You may benefit from the Business Asset Disposal Relief, which reduces the CGT rate to 10% on gains up to a lifetime limit of £1 million.

Remember, there are annual exemptions available that can help reduce your CGT liability. For the 2024/25 tax year, the Annual Exempt Amount (the amount of gain you can make before paying CGT) is £6,000 for individuals.
